Rep. Rapp Comments on Bill to Prohibit Down Syndrome Abortions

Eliminating abortion procedures that are performed specifically to prevent the birth of Down syndrome children was the topic of a rally held Monday in the state capitol. House Speaker Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny) and Rep. Judy Ward (R-Blair) were joined by other lawmakers in support of their bill, which would amend the Pennsylvania Abortion Control Act to prevent the abortion of any child solely due to a diagnosis of possible Down syndrome. Rep. Kathy Rapp (R-Warren, Forest & Crawford) commented on the proposed legislation.

House Committee Moves Bill Forward to Ban Dismemberment, Late Term Abortions in PA

The House Health Committee this week approved legislation that would ban the practice of dismemberment abortions and prohibit late term abortions after 20 weeks, and sent it to the full House for consideration. House members joined with pro-life advocates at a rally in the Main Rotunda on Tuesday to voice their support for the bill. Rep. Kathy Rapp (R-Warren, Forest & Crawford), majority chair of the bipartisan Pennsylvania House Pro-Life Caucus, attended the event and said she is confident this legislation will move successfully through the House because it is very similar to her own legislation that was approved last session.

Penn Grade Crude Coalition released a report Tuesday in Harrisburg about the huge economic impact of the conventional oil and gas industry in the Commonwealth. Lawmakers and industry representatives praised the report as the first in-depth analysis of the full economic impact of the conventional shallow well drilling and production industry, founded in Pennsylvania more than 150 years ago. Rep. Kathy Rapp (R-Warren, Forest & Crawford), a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives Oil and Gas Caucus, attended the event and offered comments on the significance of the report.

A package of legislation designed to protect the rights and freedoms of employees in Pennsylvania was introduced in Harrisburg on Wednesday. The Pennsylvania Open Workforce Initiative package of bills would give employees the right to opt in or out of union membership and would prevent compulsory or “fair-share” union dues by employees who may not support the political activities of their industry’s union.
